X1 crossover is a hit, even before BMW puts the compact 1-Series into production

You know you’re doing well with your marketing when demand for a crossover of a car that hasn’t been produced yet is gaining steam.

That’s the scenario BMW finds itself in when the BMW X1, which will be released in introduced in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, is now scheduled to have a US version to be released in 2011.

It’s a good place to be in for the guys at BMW, considering the way the ongoing economic crisis has slowed own auto sales all over the world. Before it was officially released by BMW, photos of the X1 were already being circulated in the Internet where it has received a string of positive reviews from auto aficionados everywhere.

2011 Alfa Romeo Giulia

What you see pictured above is an artist's impression of the Alfa Romeo 159 replacement that is reported to revive the Giulia nameplate as the Italians are swapping their current system of numeric names for more personal ones (e.g. the 147's successor will be named Milano). The CGI, courtesy of Motorionline, is apparently more of a wild guess on the Guilia's styling than anything else, but in any case, we'll let you decide if you like it or not.

The Giulia, which isn't expected to surface on the market before the second half of 2011, will make use of Fiat Group's new versatile C-Evo platform that will also underpins the forthcoming Milano hatchback.

And yes, unfortunately this means that the Giulia will not make the transition to rear-wheel drive. Instead, Alfa's 3-Series challenger will be offered with front-wheel drive with the option of the Italian firm's Q4 four-wheel drive system.

It's too early for any official information on the engine range, but we suspect that the Giulia will most likely be offered with Alfa's 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol as well as with a V6 petrol and numerous turbo diesels.

And how about a GTA variant? Well, that's a tough one especially since Alfa abandoned its plans for a 'hot' 159, but hopefully the Italian automaker will make it up with the presentation of the Giulia GTA.

Ferrari 458 Italia Unveiled

Ferrari 458 Italia

The curvy accomplishment sitting before you is the newly-unveiled Ferrari 458 Italia, which will replace the F430. While the car won’t be shown in public until the Frankfort Motor Show in September, Ferrari has released the details and given us an intimate glimpse of what to expect with these stunning renderings. “Designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving”, the 458 Italia features a direct-injected, mid-rear V8 good for 562 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual clutch gearbox provides seamless shifting and control while a steering wheel with integrated controls keeps nearly every necessary adjustment at the driver’s fingertips. The 458 tops out at 9000 rpm and Ferrari redesigned the gear ratio so that 80% of its torque is available at the low 3250 rpm. The powertrain combines with the compact, aerodynamic shape and lightweight aluminum structure to provide a 0 to 62 time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 202 MPH. The 458 gives us just one more thing to look forward to at Frankfort.

Adorable Audi: 2009 TTS Roadster

2009_audi_ttsFor a mid-summer run on the Berkshire back roads to a Saturday evening performance by the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood, it would be difficult to beat my TTS roadster. The top was down, the stereo was pumping out classical tunes from Sirius satellite radio, and the brilliant red TTS was the best looking car on the road — though not so good looking as to attract the attention of any Massachusetts state police, who were anyway otherwise engaged directing concert-going traffic.

The “S” designation identifies the sport version of the well-known TT roadster. An $8,200 bump in the base price gets you a pumped-up version of Audi’s 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that puts out 265 horsepower (vs. 200 hp in the TT) as well as a host of appearance features like 19-inch 7 twin-spoke wheels. Audi doesn’t make any ugly cars, and the front end, with a body-colored bar bisecting the iconic horseshoe grille, is the brand’s best looking.

The Quattro all-wheel drive system keeps the TTS planted through the tightest curves, and acceleration at higher revs is impressive. There is one important performance exception, though: The turbo is slow to spool up at low engine turns, creating sponginess underfoot and uncertainty before you attain cruising speed. I eventually discovered that a slow, even throttle advancement produced better results than an impulsive stab. But I missed the feeling of power under pedal I remember from a Porsche Boxster.

With its stubby but refined bubble shape, the TT is a modern design classic whose looks are only improved in this latest version. And thank goodness Audi didn’t follow BMW by adding a power retractable hardtop. The TTS’s convertible fabric roof is as tight as it needs to be and raises and lowers in seconds, never impinging, needless to say, on the surprisingly commodious trunk.

Owning a TT is a very special experience these days. Only 951 new ones changed hands during the first half of the year, only a fraction of those were roadsters, and only a fraction of THOSE were ”S” roadsters. The $55,075 sticker price for my test car gives you one big clue why. Still, there is nothing else quite like it on the road, and I can begin to justify the purchase to myself if I think about it as an investment, like a mechanical Swiss watch, to be handed down to future generations.

Porsche Panamera to cost Rs 2 crore

Porsche Panamera
Porsche Panamera
Porsche says that it plans to sell around 50 cars priced in the range of Rs 1.4 crore to Rs 2 crore.

You can get more details of this car from the official site.

If you are a car buff, you can also get some wallpapers here.

You can also get some interesting information from Wikipedia's page on the Panamera.

And if you want something offbeat, check out Top Gear's comparison of the Panamera with Britain's postal service.

Porsche Panamera luxury sedan

Porsche has announced to launch its luxury sedan Panamera in the Indian market at a price tag of Rs 1.4 crore.

porsche-panamera-luxury-sedan

The Carrera GT was phased out in May 2006. A high performance luxury saloon/sedan, the Panamera, was launched on Monday, 20 April 2009.

At launch, all Panameras will be powered by 4.8-liter V8s based on the Cayenne GTS motor. The engine can be had with or without turbochargers. Both engines get direct injection that helps improve power while reducing fuel consumption.

The base version spins out 400 hp at 6,500 rpm and a healthy 369 lb-ft of torque from 3,500-5,000 rpm. The force-fed versions add a turbocharger to each exhaust manifold, which boosts the output to an even 500 hp.

More importantly for fans of instant thrust, the torque goes to 516 lb-ft between 2,250 and 4,500 rpm.

Porsche is among top car brands in the world. In a May 2006 survey, the company was awarded the title of the most prestigious automobile brand by Luxury Institute, New York.

It questioned more than 500 households with a gross annual income of at least US $200,000 and a net worth of at least US $720,000. The current Porsche lineup includes sports cars from the Boxster roadster to their most famous product, the 911.

The Cayman is a hard top car similar to the Boxster in a slightly higher price range. The Cayenne is Porsche’s mid-size luxury SUV.

Spy Shots Porsche 911 mule

No automaker is immune to global environmental pressures to reduce pollutants and limit carbon dioxide emissions. Even Porsche has gotten into the green game with both diesel and hybrid options for its Cayenne along with an expected hybrid powertrain for its Panamara range. Could that fuel-saving technology make a move closer to Porsche's sportscar roots? If so, would the battery pack go under the front hood in the rear-engined car?

According to a series of spy photos from our friends at NextAutos, the answer to those questions may be yes and yes. Although there aren't any logos on the car – save for some awesomely well-placed Batman stickers (Are we looking at the next Tumbler?), the bodystyle undoubtedly screams 911 while the details have us scratching our heads. What's with the oddly shaped bulge (complete with what appears to be a lightning bolt graphic) on the hood, or the fact that the photogs claim the car made virtually no noise as it sped away at high velocities?

For what it's worth, in addition to the hybrid Cayenne and Panamera programs, we also know that the German automaker is keenly interested in electric vehicles, including its iconic 911. In other words, these are spy shots that have our interest piqued even more than usual.

Lexus takes a new design direction

Lexus
If you asked the car-buying world to applaud the history of Lexus, the ovation would be solid, deferential and short, since that's the kind of response respect and appreciation always earn.

There would be no chance of one of those sustained and heart-felt ovations that we lavish on the people and things we really love and hold dear.

This reality is clear to the folks at Toyota and Lexus, and they have been trying for some time to create cars that have more emotional resonance with buyers. This may be because most people prefer to be loved than respected, or it may be because there's a better business case to be made for attracting buyers who absolutely have to drive a Lexus than for buyers who think a Lexus is a good idea. And what if you could combine the two and create a perfect vehicle that was highly desirable?

Whatever the motivation for Lexus, these attempts have largely failed and maybe always will as long as the company is run by people who believe that "the relentless pursuit of perfection" is a slogan to warm the heart of the car-buying public. To me, it's always sounded like a threat.

But here's Lexus once again with a new direction to its lineup, given first form by the GS sport sedan models for 2006, and the company once again wants to form a deeper psychic bond with the public.

The Canadian public will get its first chances to examine the new Lexus design direction this winter, when the GS turns up at the Montreal auto show in January and the Toronto auto show in February.

What they will see is a new direction for the brand, says Ken Tomikawa, the president and CEO of Toyota Canada Inc., to keep up with its new crop of buyers, who bring different demands to the table.

"Once, a Lexus was a very visible statement to others of its owner's success," says Tomikawa. "It was, and often still is, a status symbol for the affluent. But increasingly, affluent buyers are looking inward, desiring brands that reflect their own sense of values. Lexus is responding to this important shift in its customer base with a refocused emphasis on design and technology to create unique Lexus sophisticated performance."

In Tomikawa's view, the new design is "strikingly different from previous Lexus models." From an "architectural standpoint," the GS is supposed to mark a "move towards a more sculptural direction . . . that is artistic, dynamic, simple . . . yet intriguing."

A wheelbase that's 51 mm longer results in short overhangs on the new GS, and that is supposed to "create a wide, powerful stance.''

There will be two versions of GS on sale in Canada some time in 2005 -- the GS 300 with a new 3-litre V-6 and the GS 430 with the 4.3-litre V-8.

From the smaller engine, the GS will develop 245 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. With the V-8, buyers can expect 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will send power to the ground through a six-speed automatic with a sequential manual-shift mode.

For the first time, GS buyers will be able to add all-wheel-drive to the mix, but only as an option in the GS 300. The base model of the GS 300 and the GS 430 will be rear-wheel-drive.

Tomikawa thinks the introduction of all-wheel-drive on a Lexus sedan for the first time is a big deal in Canada, "because it makes the GS 300 the luxury car for all seasons."

As the power trains suggest, the GS is about more than just style. Stuart Payne, the director responsible for Lexus in Canada, says, "From a technology standpoint, the GS employs a sophisticated array of advanced safety, comfort and convenience features that will cause even the most enthusiastic driver to take notice."

The power train combinations provide "faster and substantially smoother acceleration for even better performance," Payne notes, and -- isn't technology a wonderful thing? -- improved fuel economy.

An Adaptive Variable Suspension "allows the driver to fine-tune suspension damping with four settings ranging from normal-mode for everyday driving to a sport-mode for a tighter, more precise feel."

Payne also says that both engines will "offer the performance enhancements and advanced vehicle control of the Lexus Vehicle Dynamic Management (VDM) system.

"Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system is capable of anticipating vehicle stability problems and correcting them with a combination of braking and throttle control," he explains, adding that the "new VDM system is less intrusive than conventional Vehicle Stability Control system, but ultimately more effective."

While all this go-fast technology is happening behind the scenes, the GS's occupants will be able to enjoy a passenger compartment that is said to be "central to the new Lexus design direction."

The interior of the new GS has "a precision, luxury feel with real wood, polished metal and leather accents," says Payne. "Everything inside the GS is designed and styled to create a haven for peaceful comfort and relaxation, from contoured and supportive front seats with optional climate control to the standard 10-speaker audio system with simple steering wheel controls.''

The new GS offers numerous standard features, such as keyless SmartAccess that allows the driver to lock, unlock and start the car simply by touching the door handle (as long as the key fob is nearby) and then, with the brake pedal depressed, simply pressing a push-button to start.

An advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System can notify the driver of a "significant" loss in pressure in one or more tires, a condition that Payne notes "could potentially lead to premature tire wear and loss of control."

The GS will also feature optional Adaptive Front Lighting System, which helps illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it.

The overall goal with regard to technology in the new GS, Payne explains, "was to make it more intuitive, more intelligent and more relevant to the needs of its driver."

The GS 430 will also offer an optional Pre-Collision System that Payne claims "can help reduce collision injury and damage." The system uses a millimetre-wave radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car and a pre-collision system computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs that help to determine in advance whether a collision is unavoidable. If a collision is indeed deemed unavoidable, the system then retracts front seatbelts and prepares Brake Assist for increased braking force to help reduce collision speed.

All in all, says Payne, "nearly every feature on the GS makes this sports sedan more manageable and more engaging to drive." That of course remains to be seen, as does consumer reaction to the latest styling direction from Lexus.

2010 Lexus Hybrid Car

2010 Lexus Hybrid Car
The Toyota luxury division has released pricing for its new 2010 Lexus Hybrid car. The Lexus HS 250h is one of the most affordable and economical luxury cars on the market. The vehicle will debut late summer with a starting price of $34,200.

The automobile can achieve an impressive 35 mpg combined EPA rating. Standard equipment on the base model includes leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, a ten-speaker sound system with subwoofer, and USB, iPod, and Bluetooth phone and audio interfaces. The car rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and includes rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, wood trim, and a comprehensive key fob memory system for each driver.

2010 Lexus Hybrid Dashboard

The vehicle features a great dashboard that projects speed, fuel economy, dynamic laser cruise control warning, an image of the steering wheel-mounted controls and turn-by-turn directions in the lower part of the windshield. The display is well designed and easier to read than some competitive systems. This system doesn't seem to interfere with the driver's forward vision like most.

The car can drive zero to 60 mph in just 8.4 seconds, according to the automaker. If this is true, it is approximately 1.5 seconds faster than the Toyota Prius. However, you really can't compare this vehicle to something like the Prius, because this car includes all the luxury components you would expect from Lexus conventional counterparts.

Luxury items in cars add weight, and therefore, you can't achieve the same mileage as compact cars such as the Prius. Even so, the 35 mpg rating is still impressive for a vehicle in this class. The HS250h could attract new customers if the automobile is perceived as the most affordable and economical Lexus.

The vehicle offers real-time adjustment of torque that helps improve fuel efficiency. In addition, a rear-mounted electric motor-generator enables all four wheels to perform regenerative braking while charging the battery. The automobile is certified as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) in California, which means that it produces almost 70 percent fewer emissions than other vehicles.

To achieve greater mileage, the Lexus has a unique gull-wing-shaped roof panel design to reduce mass and to reduce wind drag. The front spoiler, rear spoiler, rear under spoiler, and diffuser fins all reduce turbulence. It is also the first Lexus vehicle to utilize carbon-neutral Ecological Plastic materials in a new futuristic cockpit and interior design.

Tata prepares for global roll-out of Nano

successfully launching world’s cheapest small car Nano on Indian roads, Tata Motors has now turned its attention to prepare for the global roll-out of the $2000 compact car. It is not only looking at markets like the U.S. and Europe, including Russia, but also banking on Latin America and South Asian nations to sell this fuel-efficient car.

Tata Motors, which has a tie-up with Fiat, is well-placed to leverage the marketing and sales network of the Italian car manufacturer across nations, particularly Europe and Latin America. Tata Motors believes that apart from India, developing South American economies like Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela could be a good market for Nano. For Fiat, Brazil is one of its biggest markets where it has strong dealership network and this may go in Tata Motors’ favour.

Tata Motors had already unveiled its Europe-specific model, Europa, in Geneva Motor Show, which it plans to introduce in 2011. Tata Group head Ratan Tata had said that though the European version of Nano would have different specifications vis-À-vis its Indian version, it will still remain a “people’s car” (in terms of pricing). Unlike the Indian model, the Europa model would be equipped with a sturdy bumper, a much rigid body, an air-conditioner, two airbags and power windows. Tata Motors already sells its models in Italy, Spain and Poland, and hence is comfortably placed to market its much-awaited model. It is also banking on Russia as a good market.

For Tata Motors, the good news came recently when Nano passed the crash test held in the U.K. recently. Interestingly, it was Nano’s Indian model and not Europa (the model designed specially for Europe markets) which passed the 40 per cent offset crash test at 56 kmph and the side-impact tests at a high-tech test facility at Birmingham. It is mandatory to clear these basic tests before a car is allowed to be sold in Europe. Similarly, Nano is headed for the U.S. market in the next couple of years. Tata Motors would have to get safety and emissions certifications before selling Nano in the U.S., where it can take advantage of the Fiat-Chrysler distribution network. Its superb mileage and emissions conforming to European standards would help it become a big draw in the Western markets, particularly Europe and the U.S. that have so far remained glued to fuel-guzzling SUVs and sedans.

Tata Motors is also looking at South Asia and African markets. While countries like Thailand and Malaysia offer good prospects for Nano in Southeast Asia, in Africa, where Tata Motors is fast progressing, Nano might run on the streets of Nigeria, South Africa, Congo, Senegal and Namibia by 2011.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK [Spied again]

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK
2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK

While the next generation Mercedes SLK is still 2-3 years away from its debut, we have photos that show Mercedes hard at work on new the SLK as it laps the Nurburgring. Insiders say the next SLK will debut sometime in 2012.

Though the prototype is still heavily disguised, it’s visible that front grille and headlights will be more upright and square than those of the current model. The new SLK will also lose the Formula-One-inspired nose the current model has.

Daylight driving lamps, Mercedes’ new door handles and the bigger mirrors “standing” on the door rather than being mounted in front of the side window will feature as well. And of course, the folding metal roof will be standard again.

It remains unclear what engines Mercedes will offer in the next-gen SLK, but a forced-induction four-cylinder is not completely out of the question. That being said, the SLK won’t be completely going green as the performance AMG model is said to be one of the last Mercedes models to use the company’s 6.2L V8.

Nissan to introduce electric SUV next month

Nissan
Nissan suv
Nissan says that it is planning to introduce three electric cars on August 2, at least one of which is intended to be assembled at the automaker’s Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant – and that one is expected to be the rumored compact SUV sized a bit smaller than the Rogue.

Measuring in at 164 inches in overall length, according to Japan’s Best Car Magazine, the SUV will be capable of a range exceeding 100 miles, if the publication is to be believed.

Between the SUV and the two other variants – likely small cars, one of which will compete with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and one of which will be sized about like the Nissan Versa, the Japanese automaker apparently intends to sell more than 5 million units on the mass market by 2012.

Fiat offers to buy Carrozzeria Bertone

Fiat offers to buy Carrozzeria Bertone

While most of its competitors are busy tightening their pockets and trying to save as much money as they can, Fiat is taking the opposite approach and has been on a recent spending spree. After purchasing Chrysler last month, the Italian-based automakers have also thrown their name on the hat as potential buyers of GM’s European and Latin American divisions, which, incidentally includes Opel and Vauxhall.

If that wasn’t enough, Fiat also offered a non-binding bid to purchase the legendary Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Bertone. Fiat, however has a number of competitors in pursuit of the Italy’s oldest coachbuilder brand, including Domenico Reviglio - head of Gruppo Prototipo, Lancia CEO Gianmario Rossignolo, Chinese automaker FAW and an additional unspecified Spanish concern.

The specifics behind Kia’s attempt at purchasing Bertone are still being kept under wraps. However, word has leaked that the Italian auto-giants are interested in a specific division – the Carrozzeria Bertone SpA - of the Gruppo Bertone corporation.

Bertone has been relatively quiet for a while now, but if Kia does indeed win the race to purchase the Italian coachbuilder, then we might as well expect to see this legendary brand return to the streets.

Supermodel Elle Macpherson goes Hot with a Fiat 500C

Supermodel Elle Macpherson goes topless with a Fiat 500C

Fiat 500C might be a small car, but the popular city car has some rather big admirers! One of them is the Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson. She loves the little 500 so much that Ms. Macpherson is already driving around a coupe version, but was recently spotted checking out what it would take to go topless with a 500C convertible.

"I love the Fiat 500C, it has that sexy, cool, Italian thing going on!” says the supermodel. “I like the way the car drives – it is perfect for cities with its small turning circle and the easy way it maneuvers through London."

The 500C has the same dimensions as the coupe version: 3.55 m x 1.65 m x 1.49 m and is also available with the same three engines as the hardtop. Those power plants consist of a 1.3 Liter Multijet turbodiesel making 75 HP, a 1.2 Liter gas burning unit producing 69 HP and the top of the line 100 HP 1.4 Liter gasoline engine.

Fiat 500C to get Abarth treatment

Fiat 500C
In a bid to better take on the MINI Cooper, Fiat is reportedly readying at least two Abarth versions of its 500C convertible. Fiat is said to be putting the finishing touches on the hotter drop tops, with a launch date likely in time for next spring’s driving season.

Thanks to Fiat 500C’s canvas roof setup, the Abarth versions were a rather simple conversion: The 500C retains the coupe’s roof rails and pillars, making it rigid and light enough for a performance setup.

The base model 500C Abarth will come sporting a 133 horsepower 1.4L powerplant. A step-up Abarth Esseesse model will also be available, producing 157 horsepower. Like all 500 models, the 500C Abarth models will be available with a wealth of customization options.

Although the standard 500 is priced below the MINI, the 500C Abarth models will likely be on par with their British counterparts. According to Autocar, the base 500C Abarth model will list from the equivalent of $26,000 in the UK.

No word if the 500C Abarth models will make it to the U.S., but there is a strong possibility.

First Drive: 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS
2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS

Talk about being on the tip of the sword. The “new” General Motors has a lot riding on its new Buick LaCrosse five-passenger sedan, the first vehicle introduced since the company emerged from bankruptcy in early July. Are they in the ballpark, or is this just more of the same for the General?

Designed and conceived using GM’s worldwide resources well before bankruptcy was even on the radar, the LaCrosse, which is nothing like the vehicle it replaces, picks and chooses its styling cues carefully. Channeling the Buick Invicta concept car that was shown at the 2008 New York Auto Show, it has been tweaked to be more functional in the “real world.”

According to GM, “the LaCrosse represents a strong collaboration between GM’s North American designers and their colleagues from the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center in China.”

Along the way, it looks like they stopped in Germany, Australia, and Japan, for good measure.

Attention-grabber
Driving through “auto-blasé” Detroit, where everything has been seen at least a dozen times before, motorists in other cars would slow down to ask “is that the new Buick?”

When we nodded the affirmative, they responded with, “it looks really good.” The question is, will these positive vibes translate into immediate sales outside of Detroit? The brass at Buick, and by extension, all of GM, hopes so.

And so do we – it’s an impressive sedan that needs make no excuses.

The styling will not be unfamiliar to Buick’s customers. The waterfall grille, from the Lucerne and Enclave, is back. So too, the non-functional portholes, this time located atop the hood instead of on the side of the front fenders. Below the beltline of the LaCrosse is a cue that might even stir auto-lust in one’s grandfather: a signature “sweep spear” body-side styling that is a direct throwback to the 1954 Buick Skylark and 1956 Buick Century.

It’s a neat touch, but Buick hopes that many of the new LaCrosse’s buyers won’t remember that far back.

The C-pillar area of this newest Buick’s greenhouse reminds us of the GS-series Lexus, a design we have long admired. Here it looks good, as well. Chrome accents help to bling it up a bit, and stylish headlight designs light the way forward. Regardless, you can choose from a bevy of stylish options to find the LaCrosse that suits your taste and your wallet.

Any way you like it
Offered in three trim levels, the CX is the entry model, which at launch will be equipped with a 3.0-liter, 255-horsepower direct injection V6. Look inside for cloth seats and 17-inch wheels. A 2.4-liter I-4 Ecotec engine will join the lineup later as an entry-level base model, and both will send power to the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The CXL also features the 3.0-liter but adds a leather interior, dual zone climate control, fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and available all-wheel-drive.

The flagship CXS model is equipped with the 3.6-liter direct injection V6, perforated leather heated and ventilated seats, chrome plated 18-inch alloys and an optional active-dampening suspension. The 3.6-liter engine, also used in the Cadillac CTS, produces 280 horsepower and 259 lb-ft. of torque. While our test vehicle was a front-driver, we can’t wait to put the optional all-wheel-drive model through its paces.

Power was seamless and emitted a slight but refined growl. QuietTuning, long the trademark for Buick ride quality, is once again a main feature of the LaCrosse’s DNA. With acoustically laminated front glass, a liquid applied sound deadener, acoustic dash mat and triple-sealed doors, it will be hard for the outside world’s noises to penetrate the cabin. The magnetically variable assisted power steering gave more road feel than we have ever felt in a Buick, even the more recent ones. MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link rear geometry help to keep the Buick’s suspension firmly planted, while at the same time allowing for real-time active dampening to vary the ride quality according to the road surface.

Targeted towards other mid-level luxury sedans such as the Lexus ES350, Acura TL, Hyundai Genesis, Toyota Avalon, and Lincoln MKS, the LaCrosse attempts to match them – and it does a good job at that.

All aboard
The interior, which features many design cues from Shanghai, emphasizes personal luxury with nice use of woods, stitched leather, soft-touch materials on the dash and innovative use of light tube technology to offer subtle blue ambient lighting around the cabin after dark. The leather, as seen in our CXS test model, was nicely utilized, especially in the seats that were more supportive and bolstered than probably any other Buick ever created.

A two-tone dark/light titanium interior utilizes gray and beige contrasting pieces to set the car apart. A walnut-and leather-wrapped steering wheel offers redundant controls for cruise and audio operations. An optional heads-up-display helps to keep your eyes on the road. Storage is at a premium here, save for a couple of map pockets on the door and a cubby under your right elbow, which also houses a power port and USB/iPod connectivity. We were surprised at the lack of power port at the base of the dashboard, where one would likely plug in a radar detector, GPS, cell phone or other power supply. On the plus side, we love the over-sized dual panel sunroof.

The center stack is right where you’d expect and looks like the Chinese impression of a jukebox. We think many traditional (read: older) Buick buyers will be disturbed by the many buttons that make up this stack of controls, but younger, more tech-savvy customers will feel right at home. The audio system is a premium Harman/Kardon 11-speaker kit that will make any vehicle sound like a rolling concert hall.

Leftlane’s bottom line
Buick has managed to incorporate a new design that reflects on a little bit of its heritage while at the same time looking ahead to a design that will be adaptable around the world, but particularly in the Chinese market, where it is among one of the most popular brands. New technologies and manufacturing capabilities have made it one of the best-built Buicks ever. With the new styling and quality that we have seen, it would be a no-brainer for a new crop of potential buyers to put the LaCrosse on their short list of candidates for personal luxury sedans.

The trouble is that list seems to grow every day. GM has hit a homerun with the new LaCrosse. But what they really need at this point is a game-changing grand slam.

Now, it’s up for the marketplace to decide.

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS base price, $33,015. As tested, $39,325.
Touring package, $850; Navigation, $1,995; Moonroof, $995; Rear thorax airbags, $350; Heads up display, $350; Red Jewel Tintcoat, $325; Engine block heater, $50; Destination, $39,325.

2010 Chevrolet Aveo RS Sporty Concept Car

Chevrolet is one of America's best-known and best-selling automotive brands, and one of the fastest growing brands in the world. With fuel solutions that range from "gas-friendly to gas-free," Chevrolet has nine models that offer an EPA-estimated 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway, and offers two hybrid models. More than 2.5 million Chevrolets that run on E85 biofuel have been sold. Today Chevrolet announced the world debut of the Aveo RS show car at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. It features a European-inspired hot hatch look designed to appeal to young enthusiasts, and hints at the next-generation Aveo.

The Aveo RS has a lot more attractive proportions and with a wider profile that makes it much more aggressively than the current model. It takes several design elements of the smallest spark, but the tinier scale. For example, the portion of glass is a similar treatment with a line belt and rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar area. The rock carving is also carved panel RS Aveo has something in common with the spark.
The Aveo Spark RS differing by more than the closest of his brow. He gets the standard dual-port grille, like all new Chevys, but the top is tapered at the top, giving the appearance of a hexagonal grid. We actually saw a deer production style Aveo next January in August at the General Motors Dome in the design and the basic model is equipped with two grids of equal height. This approach sporty RS concept, however, has a lower grille which extends further down, but this does not bother us with the additional height to width greater than the current Aveo.

Spacious and stylish interior With its matte black interior highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents, the Aveo RS show car reflects as much attention to detail as the exterior. The Boracay Blue theme continues inside, with accent stitching across the dual cockpit instrument panel, front and rear door insert, steering wheel rim, gear shift boot, parking brake, leather seat bolster and even the floor mats. The integrated center stack holds the gearshift, HVAC controls and the sound system, including a USB port. Ice-blue backlighting on the audio display, telltale indicator screen and knobs augments the blue stitching.
The motorcycle inspiration also carries inside, with a round, analog tachometer set within an asymmetrical LCD readout also trimmed in milled metal with round cutouts; and round, aluminum-trimmed side vents.
The interior is as functional as it is stylish, with storage compartments in the center stack and doors. The rear seats fold flat for carrying larger items.
Efficient performer Aveo RS show car is powered by the same high-performance 138 hp (103 kW) 1.4L ECOTEC 4-cylinder turbo engine that will be available in the coming Chevrolet Cruze.
A six-speed manual is designed to ensure the car offers more sporty driving experience.
For the show car, the designers have created a special engine cover in silver, graphite, with a brushed aluminum insert. The liquid cooling and power steering filler cap are coated with liquid in ice blue, and air intake honeycomb flanking the center of the cover is a matte finish in dark chrome and designed to meet the wheel colors.

Chevrolet has already announced the new Aveo will be built at theOrion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich., in 2011, a measure that will restore 1,200 jobs in southeast Michigan. The schedule retooling Orion Assembly for the production of the Aveo is scheduled to begin in late 2010.

2010 Ford Flex EcoBoost

Just a year after the Ford Flex first appeared, the Blue Oval has revamped its lineup in ways that make the 2010 model quite different from its forebearer. First among the changes is the Blue Oval's EcoBoost engine, which packs 3.5 liters of displacement and a duo of turbochargers to produce V8 power with V6 fuel economy. Autoblog went to the Colorado hinterlands to spend some with with the Flex and its new powerplant, and as we found out, there's more to Ford's boxy crossover than boosted performance and fuel economy.
First came wagons, and they ruled the American landscape for decades. Then body-on-frame SUVs (previously known simply as "trucks") remade the wagon by hoisting it up and adding four-wheel-drive. When the price of SUV feedstock – gas – went ballistic, their owners fled into crossovers, which remade the SUV by being lighter, nicer to drive and easier on the debit card. Then came the Ford Flex, which set out to rework both the SUV and CUV by providing 'ute-like room with a car-like ride, even though the car-like seating position is what drove wagons into the swamps and tarpits in the first place.

The design theory behind the Flex – to an outsider at least – is simple: a little box and a big box on wheels. And not far off the ground. The crucial aspect of the theory is that the Flex isn't meant to be compared against traditional CUVs; Ford has put it in the pit with full-sized SUVs like Chevrolet's Suburban and Tahoe, Dodge's Durango, Toyota's Sequoia and Jeep's Commander. And while it fights the heavyweights, it's also meant to dispatch miscellaneous challengers like General Motors' Lambda quadrouplets, the GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook/Chevrolet Traverse/Buick Enclave, and, oh yeah, minivans.

The theory is starting to meet ith some success: the Flex sold 20,016 units through the first six months of 2009. That's well down on blustery initial projections of 100,000 units per year, but well above full-sized SUVs like the Suburban and Sequoia. It's also well outpaced by incumbents like the Dodge Caravan and Acadia, yet nearly matching the Enclave's numbers. However, May and June were both sales records for the Flex, and with the EcoBoost model and its improvements, we suspect Ford can look ahead to more gains.

According to the automaker's research, the Flex is doing all the right things from a brand perspective. Forty-percent of buyers are conquest sales, more than half of that coming from Toyota and Honda, and 49% of them are new to the Ford family.

If they're after simplicity of design, they've come to the right place. The 2010 doesn't sport any salient changes over the previous models – not surprising considering Ford believes it has "the coolest wrapper out there" and "an interior to die for." Take a bristle brush to the hyperbole, though, and what you find underneath remains convincing.

The Flex's packaging is hard not to like. That doesn't mean you'll love the styling (it's polarizing by design), but it's hard to fault the spacial efficiencies won by the vehicle's squared-off shape. How does one get angry at a rectangle? We are in the "Don't Mind It" camp, but when it's SEMA-fied with some extra large wheels, we walk across the aisle to "We Dig It." This latest version offers 18-, 19-, and 20-inch wheels, and the latter size adds a sliver more presence and doesn't unduly compromise the ride.

Inside the Flex's big box, one encounters many of the same sensations found in a big box store: lots of space and everything in bulk. The back of the car resides somewhere across the state line. The seats are huge. The cupholders are huge. The center console cover was once the deck of a battleship. True, with the third-row seats deployed, you lose half of your luggage space, and the area between them and the tailgate is only good for a couple of upright suitcases. But knowing how rarely those contingency seats will probably be used, there's still room for five in the first two rows (if you don't opt for the second-row captain's chairs), and 43 cubic feet of space behind the second set of thrones. That matches the Highlander and comes in about 25 cu. ft. down on the Acadia.

The Flex's seats are fine places to be: big, flat, comfy chairs perfectly cushy and supportive enough to get you over the long haul without noticing. Opt for the leather package with cross stitching and you've got a sufficiently decorated interior with plenty of contrasts in materials, along with a leather-wrapped shifter and three different dash plastic textures. Electronic frills include audio by Sony, rear climate settings adjustable from the front, USB and auxiliary ports, Sync, and optional navigation via a brilliant touchscreen.

However, the item we came to see is nestled within the little box up front: the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. In just one day with the car, Ford drilled this line into us, "EcoBoost is more than just an engine." As reported in our Lincoln MKS EcoBoost review, the engine alone has plenty of draw. But the point here wasn't to merely install an engine and then promote the engine's benefits – the point was to produce a premium car that made a better driving argument.

So on top of the 350 horsepower, 355 pound-feet of torque and EPA fuel-economy figures of 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway, Ford lowered the Flex by 10 mm, installed stiffer springs, increased the damping rates and put the package on 20-inch rolling stock. The transmission is also upgraded with new clutches, a better torque converter, and it can be operated with paddle shifters – a segment first. Shifting times are comparable with BMW, and downshifts are rev-matched.

While those changes were made just on the EcoBoost models – the SEL and Limited – there was one change made on those two and the base SE Flex: the addition of a tilt and telescoping steering wheel.

The reason Ford took us to the capillary-taxing altitude of 5,340 feet, and then higher, was to show off the EcoBoost's skills in thinner air versus its naturally-aspirated competition. Although not exactly a useful comparison since most people don't have addresses above the cloud layer, we can testify that the EcoBoost did easily out-handle the competitor vehicles Ford brought out for the test. But before we got to the head-to-head testing, we had to drive another 3,000 feet skyward.
Standard driving is notable by the virtue of not noticing it. The EcoBoost'd Flex drives like a nicely sorted, and much lighter, car. The increased bodyroll management makes for probably the smoothest CUV driving experience we can remember. Grab the thick, leather-lined steering wheel and guide the Flex like you would any other car. No amusement park rollercoastering, no dancing from side-to-side. It's a job well done. You can put the car into "M" and play with the paddle shifters, availing yourself of rapid, seamless gear changes. But there is no need to – in "Drive" we found the car obediently answered all commands.

Nevertheless, as with so many other crossovers with car-like rides, braking is there to remind you of what you're really driving. The Flex's brakes are fine, and emergency stopping is handled efficiently and without heart-stopping yaw moments. But that's when those two-and-a-half tons say "Don't forget about me." If you drive the Flex like the car it feels like through miles of mountains, you'll receive the faintest olfactory reminder from the brakes when you stop and step outside. Admittedly, it took a day of dancing through the Rockies to achieve that effect, but we'd be a bit more wary if we were towing something.

About that: New features on the Flex that are meant to take that exemplary driving experience and make it more versatile: pull drift compensation, trailer sway control, park assist, and grade assist. Grade assist is the simplest addition, employing an overdrive lockout and engine braking to help maintain speed on long downhills.

The other three features are made possible by the Electronic Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS). We didn't get a chance to try it, but pull drift compensation addresses driving in crosswinds or crowned roads, when the car has a tendency to meander to one side. The system detects the condition and then provides torque assistance to ease the effort on the driver of keeping the car straight.

Ford touts the Flex's 4,500-pound trailering ability, so it has added trailer sway control to make the experience a safer one. The same system introduced on the 2009 F-150, it detects the trailer forces acting on the car and driver inputs to the wheel in excess of a few degrees. If it perceives trailer sway, asymmetric braking is applied to counteract the movements, and engine power can be cut if necessary.

Thankfully, we didn't get a chance to experience that either, but we did pull 2,500-pound trailers with the Flex and compared them to naturally aspirated competition. As expected, the twin turbos in the Ford made the difference at altitude, making a quantifiable difference in pulling up hills and on flats. We can't really justify dinging the competition for falling behind at alpine heights, but we can say that if you're thinking about a Flex but are concerned about towing, you can check that box off with confidence. The Flex won't waste time getting you where you're going, even with a couple of jet skis (or a track-ready ride) behind it.

Thanks to parking assist, the Parallel Parking Phobia that apparently afflicts a large swath of the population has finally been addressed with a system that truly works. Ford had brought another brand's $90,000 luxury sedan with its own self-parking system for comparison, but the demonstration was so lopsided that, out of kindness for the technologically-challenged, we don't even want to mention the other car (you know the one). Ford's system doesn't do only half the work, it finishes the job for you.

As you begin looking for a spot, you press the park assist button and ultrasonic sensors look for a suitable space. When you've found one, the system beeps to let you know, then it tells you where to stop in order for it to work its magic. From there, you just need to put the car in Reverse and operate the gas and brake. The car turns itself into the spot, and if it's a cozy one, those same sensors – and the backup camera – will let you know how much room you have behind. After that first maneuver, put the car in Drive, press the accelerator again and the car lines itself up in the spot. It is so simple – and effective – that if you can pull up next to a parked car, you can use it.

In combination, the pleasant interior, roominess, handling, towing capacity, gadgets and EcoBoost make the Flex a thumbs-up proposition. And that's before you throw the fridge in the back seat, which apparently 52% of buyers order. Ford pitches the Flex at the full-sized SUV set, and unless you need the extra room, it's an easy checklist to review; what you gain in power and space with most full-sized SUVs you lose on price and fuel economy.
Sitting the Flex next to the GMC Acadia makes more sense to us, and then it's close. The Acadia is an inch taller, an inch shorter in length and gets nearly identical gas mileage to the Flex: 16/23 for the AWD Acadia, 16/22 for the AWD Flex Ecoboost. The Acadia has more room inside and can tow 5,200 pounds, but is well down on power for hauling all that heft: 288 hp and 270 lb-ft means 67 fewer horses and 80 fewer pounds of twist – and no turbos to get things going quickly. Furthermore, the Acadia's ride and handling is nowhere near as competent as the Flex.

By the time you get to the Acadia with the SLT1 package – which is where you'd have to start to compare to the Flex – you're only about a grand away from the Ford. And there's no Sync, no Vista Roof and, if you're into that kind of thing, no Flex style. When it goes on sale later this month, the Flex SEL with EcoBoost will start at $39,995, the Limited at $43,635.
